On March 25th, 2017, an elephant was brought to Pennsylvania State University’s University Park campus by South Asian Student Association (supported by Delta Sigma Iota- Alpha Chapter) . Currently, two species of elephants exist: the Asian elephant and the African elephant. Respectively, they are endangered (likely to become extinct) or vulnerable (likely to become endangered if circumstances do not change).

A change.org petition created by Kevin Cali of State College, Pennsylvania has garnered 1070 supporters who believe Pennsylvania State University should ban animal performances.

Recommended Course of Action:
Penn State University & University Park Undergraduate Association should ban and shall not grant any funds/resources to a student organization for a period of 2 years who has, in the current academic year as is being requested, sponsored, supported in any capacity or hosted an event in which any animal listed as ‘Vulnerable’ by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources Red List.

The University Park Undergraduate Association advises the President and Vice President of Pennsylvania State University to enact a ban on all funding for performances and events featuring threatened animals which are not for educational or scientific purposes.

The University Park Undergraduate Association shall pursue all means of communication, public and private, to advocate to all representatives in the Pennsylvania State Legislature who serve in districts where Pennsylvania State University campuses are located to pass H.B. 248, an act which would prohibit “the import, sale, purchase, barter or possession of ivory or rhinoceros horn”.
