The Issue

The city government of Cape Canaveral is in the process of approving construction of six (6) hotels, each with 150+ rooms, in the area of the Radisson, the Post Office, and Manatee Park. The plans are well under way, and we, a group of residents of this city, are concerned about our quality-of-life and environmental impact. In particular, we are focusing on the following two problems:
Protecting the lagoon from more runoff and safeguarding the fragile local ecosystem, already under strain because of all the flooding of the past few years.
Regulating traffic, which in the wake of these six hotels’ opening would increase exponentially on AlA, to the point of becoming a danger to children riding on bicycles or walking to and from school buses. Also, such an increase in traffic would make access to Manatee Park excessively difficult.
We believe that we are at risk of losing the family-friendly city in which we live. We do not want to turn into a small city of large hotels with heavy consequences for its year-long inhabitants. We have no intention of stifling economic growth, nor do we want to keep people out of Cape Canaveral. We simply believe that it is possible to have both – economic growth and a
responsible set of environmental and logistical policies.
