Greetings all, good news! After pressure from a peer reviewer who refused to review for an Asian Studies journal until it's holding company, Taylor & Francis, made an official statement declaring it did not censor content in China, the journal's editor-in-chief secured that statement from the publisher. His email to the publisher stated that, "we do need an official statement because doubt on the matter has started impacting on refereeing of China papers. At this stage we have ‘only’ had one potential referee decline us because of doubt on this issue, but with qualified referees being so hard to source, one is enough to cause us concern." This demonstrates how much leverage we peer reviewers have! It would be great to continue putting pressure on the other major holding companies as well. 5 companies control over 50% of academic publishing outside of China: Reed-Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, Wiley-Blackwell, Springer and Sage.
