Nesta segunda-feira, católicos progressistas e apoiadores da Pastoral do Povo da Rua foram surpreendidos pela ameaça de Dom Odilo Scherer de transferir o Padre Júlio Lancellotti da paróquia de São Miguel Arcanjo, na Mooca, onde atua há 40 anos, sem indicação de destino. A decisão foi formalizada em carta recebida em 10 de dezembro, que também proibiu o padre de usar redes sociais e de transmitir suas missas online, amplamente acompanhadas no Brasil e no exterior. Reconhecido por sua defesa da população em situação de rua e da comunidade LGBTQIA+, Padre Júlio passou a ser alvo de medidas que levantam suspeitas sobre motivações políticas, ideológicas ou pressões externas. A decisão de Dom Odilo compromete um trabalho humanitário essencial, pondo em  risco de descontinuidade projetos como a Biblioteca Wilma Lancellotti, recém-inaugurada, dentre outras ações que revelam o amor cristão na sua forma mais pura e nobre.  Queremos Padre Júlio em plena atuação à frente de sua paróquia!

A perseguição institucional enfrentada pelo Padre Júlio Lancelotti chegou a um ponto crítico, exigindo a intervenção urgente do Papa Leão XIV. Padre Júlio, amplamente reconhecido por seu trabalho incansável em defesa dos direitos humanos e dos mais vulneráveis de nossa sociedade, tem sido alvo de uma campanha sistemática de intimidação e abuso institucional.

Entre 2019 e 2023, o aumento nas ações de violência institucional contra indivíduos e grupos que trabalham com a assistência social no Brasil cresceu 18%, segundo dados do Instituto Brasileiro de Direitos Humanos. O Padre Júlio, que tem desempenhado um papel essencial na luta contra a desigualdade social e na promoção de justiça e solidariedade, não deveria enfrentar restrições em sua missão pastoral e social.

O silêncio não é uma opção. A história nos mostrou, em várias ocasiões, que quando líderes influentes, como o Papa, levantam suas vozes contra injustiças, o mundo tende a ouvir. A intervenção do Papa Leão XIV é crucial neste momento para acabar com esta perseguição e garantir que o trabalho vital do Padre Júlio possa continuar sem intimidações.

A importância do impacto do Padre Júlio na comunidade carente de São Paulo não pode ser negligenciada. Sua dedicação para com os sem-teto, refugiados, e os marginalizados, tem sido vital para oferecer dignidade e esperança a essas pessoas. Continuar permitindo que atos de intimidação prossigam seria uma grave injustiça e um desrespeito ao trabalho humanitário que ele representa.

Nós instamos o Papa Leão XIV a agir imediatamente. Este é um momento decisivo onde sua intervenção pode permitir que o Padre Júlio Lancellotti continue seu trabalho vital. TO HIS HOLINESS POPE LEO XIV

In defense of the pastoral mission and public witness of Father Júlio Lancellotti

Most Holy Father,

With filial respect and profound reverence for the Petrine ministry entrusted to Your Holiness, we, Catholic faithful from Brazil, humbly address this petition to express our grave concern regarding recent measures imposed upon Father Júlio Lancellotti, priest of the Archdiocese of São Paulo, who has served for more than four decades at the Parish of São Miguel Arcanjo, in the Mooca district of the city of São Paulo.

According to information publicly known and widely reported among the faithful, Cardinal Archbishop of São Paulo, Dom Odilo Pedro Scherer, has determined that Father Júlio:

*cease the live broadcast of Holy Masses;

*suspend all activity on social media;    

 * and faces the possibility of being removed from the parish where he has carried out a renowned and deeply evangelical work of social assistance.

These measures have caused profound perplexity, pain, and indignation among countless Catholics and non-Catholics alike, especially those who have witnessed Father Júlio’s tireless dedication to the homeless population, to the poor, to the marginalized, and to all those whom society prefers not to see.

For over forty years, Father Júlio has embodied a pastoral ministry of presence, mercy, and concrete charity. His work with people living on the streets of São Paulo is not peripheral to the Gospel; it is at its very heart. He feeds the hungry, clothes the naked, defends human dignity, and proclaims Christ not only with words, but with life itself. In doing so, he has also become the target of hatred and systematic attacks from extremist and fascist sectors of Brazilian society, who reject the Church’s preferential option for the poor and distort Christian faith into an ideology of exclusion.

Most Holy Father,

Father Júlio’s mission stands in clear continuity with the authentic values of Christ, who identified Himself with the least, and with the magisterium and pastoral vision of Pope Francis, whom Your Holiness so openly admired and esteemed. Like Pope Francis, Father Júlio has insisted that the Church must be a field hospital, that pastors must carry “the smell of the sheep,” and that silence in the face of injustice is not neutrality, but omission.

By assuming the name Leo XIV, Your Holiness evoked the legacy of Pope Leo XIII, whose encyclical Rerum Novarum marked a decisive commitment of the Church to social justice and the dignity of labor. This choice was received worldwide as a powerful sign that Your pontificate would be attentive to the social question, to inequality, and to the suffering produced by unjust structures.

We also recall, with hope, that Your Holiness has lived for many years in Latin America, experiencing firsthand the tragedy of extreme social inequality, exclusion, and poverty. For this reason, we firmly believe that Your Holiness can deeply understand both the urgency and the evangelical legitimacy of Father Júlio Lancellotti’s work, as well as the importance of allowing it to be visible, shared, and known—especially in a world increasingly threatened by authoritarianism, reactionary movements, and the erosion of compassion.

To silence a priest whose voice gives dignity to the voiceless is not merely an internal administrative matter; it risks being perceived as the silencing of the Gospel itself in the public square.

Therefore, Most Holy Father, we respectfully and earnestly ask:

*that the situation of Father Júlio Lancellotti be examined with pastoral solicitude and justice;

*that his public witness and communication in service of the poor be protected and valued;

*and that the Church in Brazil may continue to be a credible sign of mercy, courage, and fidelity to Christ, especially among the most abandoned.

We entrust this plea to Your paternal discernment, confident that the Successor of Peter, called to confirm his brothers and sisters in faith, will hear the cry of those who stand with the poor and the persecuted.
