Justice for Father Zivojin and the Saint Sava Cathedral in New York City
Dear Brothers and Sisters of the New York Parish and Friends of Saint Sava Cathedral around the World:
Our church is again under attack. Bishop Irinej Dobrijevic, the Bishop of Eastern America, removed Father Zivojin Jakovljevic, the Cathedral Dean and Parish Priest of Saint Sava Cathedral in New York on November 16, 2020 without notice and without cause. In addition, Bishop Irinej has refused to approve the newly elected Executive Board for over 2 months. This comes a little more than one year from when he reinstated Father Zivojin after removing him last year for whistleblowing on excessive and undocumented charges in connection with the reconstruction of the cathedral. We remind you that the Saint Sava Cathedral was destroyed in a tragic fire on Easter in 2016.
Last year’s conflict was settled when an agreement was reached with Bishop Irinej on June 21, 2019, as evidenced by the statement below from the “Save Saint Sava Committee” made up of former Trustees (as posted on their petition on the change.org website).
“We are using this opportunity to thank you all for the support, which you have expressed towards our beloved Saint Sava Cathedral in New York City. In spite of the difficult situation that our church and the parish has undergone as the result of the fire, we are comforted to know that we are not alone. We are glad to inform you that His Grace Bishop Irinej has reinstated the dismissed members of the Board of Trustees as well asFather Zivojin as the Dean of the Cathedral and the Parish Priest. The Bishop has also granted the request that our Parish can call an Assembly and engage an independent audit to review the documentation and finances related to the construction work. Thanking you again for your effort and support, we look forward to fully restoring our beloved church and community to the glory of God and the benefit of us all.”
It is clear that Bishop Irinej reneged on his promises from last year. Even though he finally conceded to granting the Parish’s wish to have an elected board with elections on September 20, 2020 (over a year from when he initially agreed to this condition), he has refused to approve the newly elected Executive Board, a pre-condition to them taking their oath of office. No independent audit was ever done and presented to the Parish. Finally, he reinstated Father Zivojin only after immense public pressure and the intervention of Patriarch Irinej of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Now, as Patriarch Irinej lay on his death bed (of COVID-19), Bishop Irinej saw an opportunity and removed Father Zivojin yet again. The parishioners of Saint Sava Cathedral are well aware that the reasons for this removal are Father Zivojin’s relentless pursuit of the truth, justice and the unity of our church. We need your full support to protect our beloved church. We ask you to sign this petition to request from Bishop Irinej the following:
1. To again reinstate Father Zivojin as Cathedral Dean and Parish Priest;
2. To approve the elected Executive Board without conditions;
3. To engage an independent third party for a full audit of the rebuilding effort which has cost the parish over $8 million dollars and for which there has been no pre-approval by parishioners (which is contrary to the Bylaws of the Parish since such approval is explicitly required); and
4. To accept a legal commission to be sent by the Holy Synod to the USA to investigate the state of affairs of the New York Parish.

Правда за оца Живојина Јаковљевића и Саборни xрам Светог Саве у Њујорку
Драга браћо и сестре њујоршке парохије и пријатељи Саборног храма Светог Саве широм света:
Наша црква је опет на удару. Епископ Иринеј Добријевић, епископ Епархије источноамеричке, је поново сменио оца Живојина Јаковљевића са места свештеника Саборног храма Светог Саве у Њујорку 16. новембра 2020. године без упозорења и без повода. Такође, Епископ Иринеј одбија да призна новоизабрани Одбор њујоршке парохије већ два месеца. Ови догађаји се одвијају мало више од годину дана од када је Владика уклонио, а затим вратио оца Живојина, јер је отац Живојин разобличио неоправдане и недокументоване трошкове у вези са реконструкцијом цркве. Подсећамо вас да је црква изгорела у трагичном пожару на Васкрс 2016. године.
Прошлогодишњи конфликт је решен када је парохија дошла до споразума са Владиком 21. chanјуна 2019, што се може видети из приложеног дописа ”Комитета за спас Саборног храма Светог Саве” који су чинили бивши чланови повереништва и који је био постављен на change.org:
”Користимо ову прилику да захвалимо свима на подршци који сте показали према нашој драгој Катедралној цркви Светог Саве. Упркос тешкоћама кроз које пролази наша црква и парохија услед пожара, налазимо утеху да нисмо сами. Драго нам је вас обавестимо да је Његово Преосвештенство Владика Иринеј вратио смењене чланове Повереништва, као и оца Живојина, старешину цркве Свети Сава и парохијског свештеника. Владика је прихватио захтев да наша парохија може да сазове Скупштину и упосли независног ревизора да прегледа документацију и финансије везане за реконструкцију цркве. Још једном вам захваљујемо за ваш труд и подршку, и радујемо се обнови наше драге цркве и заједнице у име Божије и на општу корист.”
Јасно је да је Владика Иринеј прекршио своје обећање. Мада је коначно удовољио жељи парохије да добије изабрани Одбор на изборима 20. септембра 2020. године (преко годину дана од када се сложио са овим захтевом), до дан данас одбија да одобри нови Одбор, што је предуслов да би Одбор положио заклетву. Није спроведена независна ревизија, нити су резултати предочени парохији. Владика је прошле године вратио оца Живојина тек након великог притиска јавности и интервенције блаженопочившег Патријарха Иринеја. Сада, упокојењем Патријарха Иринеја, Владика Иринеј је поново сменио оца Живојина. Парохијани цркве Светог Саве знају да је разлог за смену оца Живојина његова неумољива тежња за истином, правдом и јединством наше цркве. Потребна је ваша пуна подршка нашој драгој цркви. Позивамо вас да потпишете ову петицију којом захтевамо од Владике Иринеја следеће:
1. Да врати оца Живојина на место старешине Катедралне цркве и парохијског свештеника;
2. Да одобри изабрани одбор без предуслова; и
3. Да се ангажује независна страна која ће урадити пуну ревизију реконструкције цркве на коју је до сада потрошено преко 8 милиона долара парохијских средстава и без одобрења парохије што је супротно статуту парохије јер је такво пред-одобрење обавезноl и
4. Да прихвати правну комисију која би слањем мисије у САД утврдила чињенично стање у њујоршкој парохији.
