The Lance Armstrong / Bruyneel / USPS case is only the latest in a string of doping-related fiascos which have ruined both the sporting integrity and the public image of road cycling over the last two decades. As a body the UCI has consistently failed to tackle this issue decisively, has almost wilfully failed to make it its business to be aware of what has been going on at the top levels of the sport, and has most recently resorted to attacking and even filing suit against those who sought to bring openness into the closed, omerta-driven world of the professional peloton's doping problem both past and present.
Pat McQuaid, as president of the UCI, bears the moral responsibility for the clear failings of the UCI during his six years in office, and for the damage to the sport which has resulted from these failings. He should accept this responsibility and send a clear message that it is time for change and renewal by resigning.
