The Emergency Doesn’t End When a Service Dog Is Separated From Their Handler

Jocelin WittUT, United States

When people think about emergencies involving someone with a disability, they often focus on the immediate situation.

But there’s something that can easily be overlooked: the service dog standing beside that person.

For many handlers, a service dog isn’t simply a companion. That dog is trained to recognize medical changes, respond to specific symptoms, retrieve assistance, or perform other tasks that help keep their handler safe.

Those responsibilities don’t suddenly disappear because law enforcement or another first responder arrives.

In fact, that may be when a handler needs their service dog the most.

Imagine experiencing a medical emergency while the one trained partner who recognizes your warning signs is taken away from you.

Imagine trying to explain why that dog needs to remain nearby while you’re already frightened, overwhelmed, or struggling medically.

This is one of the reasons I created Tiny’s Bill.

Our goal is to establish stronger federal standards for how first responders interact with service dog teams, including better education, clearer procedures, and meaningful accountability.

This isn’t about being against law enforcement. It’s about education, awareness, and accountability.

It’s about ensuring that first responders understand the important role service dogs play and recognize how unnecessary separation can create additional medical risks.

A service dog should never be treated as an afterthought when a handler’s safety may depend on that dog’s trained tasks.

Behind the Scenes: Our Advocacy Continues 🐾

While we’re continuing to spread awareness and gather support, there’s also work happening behind the scenes.

I currently have approximately 15 additional Tiny’s Bill advocacy packets prepared for mailing early next week.

These packets are another opportunity to introduce Tiny’s Bill, explain why stronger protections are needed, and ask those in positions of influence to take this issue seriously.

I know meaningful change doesn’t happen overnight.

Sometimes advocacy means continuing to write letters, prepare information, reach out, follow up, and keep showing up even when the results aren’t immediately visible.

We’re still here. We’re still working. And we’re not giving up.

How You Can Help 🩷

If you’ve already signed our petition, thank you. Your support means more than you know.

Please consider sharing it again with your friends, family, or someone who may not understand the importance of service dog protections.

And if you haven’t signed yet, I hope you’ll take a moment to learn about Tiny’s Bill and add your voice.

Every signature, every share, and every conversation helps keep this issue in front of people who need to hear it.

Protect Service Dogs. Protect Their Handlers.

Thank you for continuing to stand beside Tiny and me.

Together, we can keep working toward meaningful change.

With gratitude,

Jocelin & Tiny 🐾💗
