Pass The Brendan Bill: Protect Forgotten Partners
The issue
My name is Alex Seizis. I’m a transgender woman, a survivor, and the partner of Brendan Philip Anderson, who died on March 2, 2025. This petition is to demand the creation and passing of a new law—The Brendan Bill—to protect partners like me who are erased, excluded, and blamed when the system fails.
Because Brendan was the love of my life and i was his first and last love. I was with him through everything—his psychosis, his addiction, his court cases, his pain. I held him when no one else did. And when he died, I was erased. I wasn’t listed as next of kin. I was called “an acquaintance.” I wasn’t told the truth. I wasn’t given his belongings. And I had to survive that grief with no legal rights, no voice, and no justice. This petition is my way of saying: we are not disposable. Partners like me—queer, trans, complex—deserve recognition and protection.
Every year, countless people find themselves in similar situations, where their profound relationships are disregarded, especially within the LGBTQ+ community. When systems overlook us, they perpetuate harm, leaving us to face unimaginable grief and isolation without support or validation. Despite existing in committed, loving partnerships, we’re stripped of our roles and denied our rights just when we need them most.
The Brendan Bill aims to address this void by securing legal recognition and rights for partners who have been systematically ignored. This includes ensuring that partners are recognized as next of kin, have the right to be informed, and have access to their deceased partner's belongings. This bill would provide a framework for acknowledging the legitimacy of our relationships, protecting us from erasure, and ensuring our rightful place in times of crisis.
I urge lawmakers and policymakers to understand the gravity of this issue and the deep-seated injustice it represents. Passing The Brendan Bill is not just a legislative action but a step towards validating the humanity and dignity of all bereaved partners. We need laws that reflect the reality of diverse partnerships and protect us from being discarded when we are most vulnerable.
Please sign this petition to honor Brendan's memory by ensuring no partner is ever left behind, forgotten, or erased again.
