Pass the Reasonable Limits Bills on Seclusion & Restraint of Children in Michigan Schools

The Issue

Please make sure House Bills 5409-5418 to end the use of non emergency physical restraint of children in schools are passed.  These are reasonable and needed rules for use of seclusion and restraints on children in schools.

It is clear that restraining children in school is not productive for students, causing PTSD, trauma and even death.  These practices are prohibited for use in medical settings and in prisons, because they are inhumane and ineffective, too easily subject to misuse.  Students, children, should not be afforded any less respect than criminals or medical patients.  These practices are dehumanizing to both students and teachers.  Moreover, they are unnecessary.

Lt. Governor Brian Calley has championed this cause out of moral necessity and from careful study.  “The use of restraint and seclusion practices in non-emergency situations has been against state policy for 10 years, but unfortunately, the practice still remains. Legislation is currently before the House of Representatives that would secure a better, safer future for some of our most vulnerable children. Passing this law will ensure that all kids are entitled to a safe and dignified education, no matter which school they attend. I urge the House and Senate to send this crucial legislation to the governor’s desk before the end of the year.

We ask that you

  • Restore the parental notification clause so that parents are notified within 24 hours, in writing, that their child has been restrained physically by the school, and the circumstances surrounding the occurrence.  Especially for children with disabilities who cannot communicate with their parents, this lack of notification can lead to extended trauma
  • Pass House Bills 5409-5418

We are parents, teachers, professionals and concerned citizens of the Great State of Michigan.  We ask you to lift our state and our children to a higher level of action and accountability.

Please pass these important bills to protect Michigan's Children.
