SAVE THE GREYHOUNDS & GALGOS OF PORTUGAL
The coalition 'Save the Greyhounds and Galgos of Portugal' aims to ban racing with greyhounds and galgos in Portugal.
This coalition is led by Anima Macau, Pet levrieri Onlus and GREY2K USA Worldwide, alongside a local Portuguese organisation which will be joining the campaign, and supported by dozens of other animal protection associations worldwide.
As with the recently concluded and highly successful campaign to close the Canidrome and save the Macau greyhounds, the aim of this coalition is to build a vast international anti racing network of organisations, charities and campaign groups who will work together to raise awareness and call for protection laws and severe penalties for anyone who exploits, mistreats, abandons or kills greyhounds and galgos in racing, coursing and hunting with galgos in Portugal.
In Portugal the dog racing industry has been allowed to get established. There is clear evidence that racing is a systematic activity with economic interests at its core. Greyhounds and galgos are being treated as ‘objects’ for betting, used and abused and then discarded. They are routinely imported, bought and sold for thousands of euros each. In fact, there are more than twenty Portuguese racing kennels already in existence. At these facilities, gentle hounds are bred and trained in inhumane ways, denied medical care when injured and often destroyed when no longer useful.
The use of doping, harsh training methods including the use of electric shock collars, extreme physical exploitation to the point of death, and the ever increasing number of abandoned greyhounds, often in appalling physical conditions: this is the sad reality of Portuguese greyhounds and galgos.
Soon we will publish the list of associations, rescues and groups from around the world who have joined this international coalition so far, signing the letter that will be sent to the Parliamentary Deputees, the President and the Prime Minister of Portugal, and also this petition.
