On February 12, 2018, an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore charged Imran Ali, 24 with raping and murdering six-year-old Zainab Amin in the case that enraged the country and sparked riots in Kasur, the hometown of both the girl and the convict. Police investigators have stated that they had matched DNA from eight girls’ bodies, including Zainab’s, with the convicted killer. On February 17, Ali was sentenced to death for the rape and murder of seven year old Zainab. Three days later he appealed to the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the verdict that handed him the death penalty on four counts. In the appeal, he claimed to be not guilty, instead stating that the trial was conducted in haste and legal requirements were not fulfilled during the trial. As of March 20th, Ali's appeal has been rejected and his initial sentence will be upheld.
