It's been almost a year with seemingly little progress, little communication, and no resolution on the matter of illegal construction on parkland.
The NMPRAC built on protected prairie parkland next to a Federally landmarked building. They built without a permit issued by the Chicago Department of Buildings. They built in violation of their lease. Their landlord, the Chicago Park District, did not give them permission. The Park District has been questioned over and over again, and substantive progress has not been seen or communicated. The community has been excluded from the conversation. NMPRAC remains silent and defiant.
Public land is threatened but the public hasn't gotten answers.
Finally, the long silence is going to be broken. Answers will be given.
How? In a lawsuit.
Of course, this lawsuit will consume resources of the taxpayers. Entities involved are taxpayer funded.
It's the first time I've had kind thoughts about my property taxes doubling in Humboldt Park. Thank you, City of Chicago. This is money well spent.
Corporation Counsel, please make the Chicago Park District accountable for their disappointing inaction. Please make the NMPRAC accountable for their deplorable actions. Please bring justice to the people of Chicago by restoring and returning public lands taken from us.
