Dear TCA family,
THANK YOU for your support! In just two days we already have 175 signatures on the petition! We are grateful that you’ve added your voice to our effort and are hopeful that this will help Dr. Thomason and the TCA board understand how important it is to TCA families that library staff choose books that reflect TCA’s Core Values and the criteria the board has selected.
To help continue the momentum, we are asking each of you to pass along this petition to three other TCA families. To help make that easy, here is a quick link to our petition page (https://bit.ly/TCAPetition) and another to a page with links to the petition and some information about the TCA library issue (https://bit.ly/m/TCAGoodBooks).
We strongly believe that TCA can and should get rid of sexually explicit books without putting the school at risk. We are grateful that in the last few days, the U.S. Department of Education has spoken to this exact issue!
In 2023, the Department of Education appointed a “book ban coordinator” who oversaw 11 investigations into schools that had removed age-inappropriate, sexually explicit, or obscene materials from their libraries. The complaints alleged that removing these books violated civil rights laws.
The new leadership in the Department of Education has changed course. This press release affirms that “parents and school boards have broad discretion” to develop “commonsense processes by which to evaluate and remove age-inappropriate materials.”
We only want the best for TCA and its library and hope this great development in D.C. helps encourage TCA leadership to do the right thing.
Thank you again for your support and for your help in spreading the word about this important issue!
With gratitude,
