100 Protesters Demand Palma Finally Retire Its Horses
Around 100 people marched through Palma this evening, demanding an end to horse-drawn carriages. Organised by Satya Animal, Progreso en Verde and ARDE, the demonstration saw campaigners take to the streets demanding a binding deadline for replacing horse-drawn carriages with electric alternatives. A vehicle accompanying the march displayed footage of horses collapsing while being forced to pull carriages. The turnout was more than double that of the previous demonstration in September.
Palma promised to end horse-drawn carriages by 2024. Two years later, horses are still being exploited for tourist entertainment. The council recently announced that it hopes to introduce its first electric carriages by summer 2027, but there is still no binding deadline for retiring every horse. Today's demonstration shows that campaigners are not prepared to let the council quietly abandon its promise.
