For those of you still interested, I got a sneak preview of the Lake Harriet bandshell color choice last week in the MPRB paint room, along with a dozen others . It's a pretty good match for the slate blue color the bandshell had from 1986 through 2004. Assuming that the Park Board concurs, which could happen as soon as Nov.30, the color transformation will begin once the rehab work on the bandshell is completed next year. The slate blue color will be applied with paint to the existing siding, which generally remains in good shape. But the deteriorating roofing shingles will be replaced with a new set of shingles that will be hand-dipped into stain. They're recommending stain for the roofing shingles because it allows the shingles to breathe and therefore resist rot. The roofing stain is more transparent than paint, which doesn't breathe, and therefore it will weather in ways that we'll all discover as aging and UV damage change the look. But those attending, including area commissioner Cathy Abene, were unanimously in liking the staff-recommended approach.
