B & G CLUB - CITY COUNCIL MTG RECAP
Quick summary: Several of us attended the city council mtg on Monday 4/25. We demanded a PUBLIC STUDY SESSION be held between city council and the Board members of the Pacifica B & G club. This will enable the community to have a two-way conversation about our club, parents are done being in the dark.
We want to ensure any new "agreement" or press release from the B&G Club isn't just a delay tactic for 1 to 2 years.
My statement is below, other statements from fellow residents to follow:
4/25/22
Good evening city council and members of the Pacifica community,
My name is Erin Pickett. My two sons, age 8 and 10, attend the Pacifica Boys & Girls Club.
Two weeks ago, several families were made aware of the plans to close our Pacifica clubhouses in the Fall. This was revealed by a staff member, who realized that to continue to keep parents in the dark about these closures, would be an incredible injustice to the children in our community.
In the face of this news, the Pacifica families of the Boys & Girls Club and the surrounding community have been completely shut out of any conversation or communication about these closures.
As it stands now, Pacifica is poised to endure the complete loss of the Boys & Girls Clubs, both at IBL and Yosemite campuses. There are no other options for our children to go.
At this writing, we have over 1, 075 signatures on our petition to save this club. Over one thousand people will NOT be ignored, and behind those voices who signed, are thousands more individuals who are rightfully angered and outraged, over the callous disrespect we are experiencing, at the hands of the Boys & Girls Club board members and their CEO.
To that end, I call upon the city council tonight to hold a PUBLIC STUDY SESSION, within a week, with invited Boys & Girls Club leadership, to fully discuss this situation.
We need any member of council to schedule this study session, where the public and council can have a TWO WAY conversation, to clear the air and get all the cards on the table, and have BGC leadership respond.
Additionally, if and when, an agreement is reached, the parents and this community will require a formal review of the agreement, to determine if it meets the needs of their students.
Families need to ensure any new "agreement" will NOT be a way to delay closure for 1 to 2 years.
In summary, in terms of our community expectations, a clear statement is required from our city council that Pacifica Boys & Girls Club stay open.
We hope that you will use your strengths and resources as a city council, and that you will continue to work with us to save our club.
Suggested members to invite to our study session with the city council:
Boys & Girls Club co-CEO's Jenny Obiaya Peter Fortenbaugh with Rob Burgess continuing as Chair.
Rob Burgess, Boys & Girls Club President
Ken Busch, Boys & Girls Club North San Mato
Jeff Nix, Mid-Pen Boys & Girls Club
Thank you for your time,
Erin Pickett Pacifica Mom & Resident
