Thank you for making contact with us and for advising us of your thoughts towards the suspension of this bus stop. The issue with this stop is driver visibility, being a blind spot here and having a dangerous right turn with cars travelling too fast toward the bus. In the last month before closing the stop, there were multiple accidents at this stop, so the closure is warranted. Not closing the stop would be bordering on negligence. We received a recommendation from the bus company, their insurer, multiple drivers and after having conducted site visits, deemed this necessary action.
While it is challenging that there is some distance between stops, we were unfortunately unable to identify a suitable and safe option for a temporary stop to be established in the short term.
While we understand this is a popular stop, we cannot justify keeping it open when putting lives at risk. We are actively investigating a long term solution here, and how we can improve the intersection safety at this location in general. In the coming weeks, we will be working with the Dunedin City Council and with bus companies to work on a temporary solution for this stop, while the longer term safety continues to be investigated.
DCC are the road controlling authority and as it’s an issue with the intersection safety itself, it is with them to investigate.
Kind regards
