Actualización de la peticiónOppose the Use of the Notwithstanding Clause to Clear EncampmentsFord is Criminalizing Encampments

Doug Ford is at it again. While we may have stopped the notwithstanding clause being built into legislation to punish homeless people, it isn't enough.

The Ford government has introduced Bill 6, which criminalizes people living in encampments even though they have nowhere else to go.

Did you know that this approach to encampments was developed by an American billionaire, Joe Lonsdale? His think tank, the Cicero Institute, has been bring legislation across the United States to put homeless people in jail — including in Washington D.C., by order of Donald Trump. This legislation has been a disaster: it hasn't housed a single person, but it has caused irreparable harm to homeless people, filled up prisons, diverted police resources from solving serious crimes like homicides, and increased taxes for everyone. Even police don't like it, with law enforcement in six States opposing the criminalization of homeless people to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Like you, I'm worried about Trump's tariffs and the state of our economy. I know that if it gets worse, more people will be at risk of losing their livelihoods — including their housing.

So why is Doug Ford bringing in Trump-approved policy to deal with a homelessness crisis that will be made worse by Donald Trump?

Help me tell Ford that we need housing, not punishment for homeless Ontarians.
