City Council Rezones Eastlake Reservoir Property near Karl's Farm

Dear Supporters,

I am sorry to share with you that the city council has voted to re-zone the land at Eastlake Reservoir Number One. This was a quasi-judicial process, which means that the council members had to act as impartial judges. They had to follow the rules of the Unified Development Ordinance of the City of Northglenn and check if the landowners met the requirements for rezoning. These requirements are:

a) The rezoning is consistent with the Comprehensive Plan and the Unified Development Ordinance;

b) The rezoning matches the purpose of the new zoning district;

c) The area has changed enough to justify a zoning change;

d) The rezoning will not cause negative effects to the nearby properties or the neighborhood;

e) The public facilities and services can serve the land without affecting the existing development; and/or

f) There was an error in setting the current zoning.

This was a useful and difficult experience of learning how local government works and I appreciate everyone who signed this petition. I also thank the city council members who carefully considered the evidence against the requirements set before them and acted in the best interests of the city.

It is clear to me now that protecting wildlife and environment is not a local government duty but a state and federal one. I think this issue could be taken to the state legislatures and environmental agencies if there was some ecological value. I will not be pursuing this issue further at this time. However, I would feel obligated, and be ready to take things further, if I find proof that this area has ecological importance.
