The Issue

TO: The KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Authority (EThekwini Local Committee)
REGARDING: Application for a New Liquor License
PROPOSED TRADING NAME: Coconut Social Club
PROPOSED PREMISES ADDRESS: 215 Wakesleigh Road, Bellair, Durban

We, the undersigned residents, property owners, and stakeholders of Bellair (including Kenmare Road, Wakesleigh Road, and adjoining streets), hereby formally OBJECT to the granting of a liquor license to the proposed "Coconut Social Club" under Section 43 of the KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Licensing Act, 2010.Core Grounds for Objection:Proximity to Student Accommodation: The proposed tavern is located in immediate proximity to a student accommodation facility. Operating a liquor outlet here will directly compromise the safety, security, and quiet study environment required by these young learners.Disruption of School Route: 215 Wakesleigh Road sits directly on a heavily traversed pedestrian and transport route used daily by school children. Placing a tavern here exposes minors to public drinking, anti-social behavior, and increased traffic hazards. Negative Community Impact: A tavern in this high-density residential and educational zone will inevitably lead to severe noise pollution, parking congestion, public disturbances, and a decline in local property values. It is completely contrary to the public interest. By signing below, we officially register our objection and demand that the KwaZulu-Natal Liquor Authority REFUSE this application.

My family and I moved to this neighborhood for its quiet streets and sense of community, ideal for raising our children in a safe and secure environment. For years, neighbors have shared homemade treats from their gardens, held block parties, and looked out for each other's kids. This neighborhood is a haven of peace and camaraderie. It's a place where everyone knows your name, and you're greeted with a smile wherever you go.

However, our way of life in Bellair is now threatened. A new application for a liquor license has been submitted to open a nightclub right in the heart of our community. This establishment, given its nature and operating hours, could disrupt the peace we've come to cherish. It's more than just noise on nights and weekends; it’s the potential increase in traffic, litter, and, most disturbingly, the chance of crime that concerns us.

Statistics from other neighborhoods highlight the reality: areas surrounding late-night venues have reported up to a 40% increase in noise complaints and a 25% uptick in petty crimes such as vandalism and theft. This is not what we want for our families.

Our opposition is not against economic development, nor are we against all businesses. We believe in responsible development that enhances the quality of life for everyone in our community, not just a select few. We would welcome businesses that complement our neighborhood’s character instead of those that compromise it.

Furthermore, there are more suitable locations already zoned for nightlife just a few kilometers away, ensuring that those interested in such venues would not face inconvenience.

Please join us in protecting our neighborhood by signing this petition. Your signature represents a stand for preserving our community's values and quality of life. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that our home remains a safe, peaceful, and thriving place for everyone.
