MEETING IS TONIGHT FEBRUARY 15 AT 7PM !

Good Morning,

The community meeting is TONIGHT February 15th at 7 pm and will be held at the Kinsmen Centre, 71 First Lake Drive. Our local politicians and the leaders of the Beacon House (who are running the Pallet Village/Shelter) will be attending.

The petition now has over 1000 signatures, but we need a strong showing of community strength at this meeting. We need to make it clear that Lower Sackville will not tolerate these developments being forced upon us with no community consultation. We need 100s of people to show up tonight for this meeting. Please plan on attending and please bring a couple concerned neighbors.

In my opinion Lower Sackville (especially the First Lake Area) is at a turning point. In less than a year, the “warming centre” at 125 Metropolitan, across the street from Leslie Thomas Jr. High, has transformed from a place where 20 people could spent the night to a full time 24/7 shelter where over 50 people will be able to live (including the Pallet and micro shelters). This was done with virtually zero community engagement. The Cobequid encampment, located on prime land in Lower Sackville will soon be transformed into a large scale “tiny home”  development for the unhoused, again with zero community engagement.

In addition, the leaders of the Cobequid Ballfield Encampment have publicly stated they are looking for a new location to set up another encampment and rumours are swirling that another project is planned for land located on First Lake Drive.

What will our neighbourhood look like in a year? What is next? We don’t know because our government and the non-profit groups receiving our taxpayer dollars think they don’t have to even speak to us before they drastically change our community. A strong showing tonight will let them know that we expect to be treated with respect and be consulted on all issues that so greatly affect our community.
