Thank you all for supporting our efforts to halt the use of floating oyster cages in Broad Cove. The petition has been changed and I encourage you to reread what members of Newington are saying to Fish and Game.
For those of you who live here or have visited Newington, the impact area is between Great Bay Marina and Fox Point. Patrons who utilize Great Bay Marina and tourists who visit will lose the beautiful sunset views over Fox Point while sitting at Lexi's or on your boat. Compound this with oyster defecation and dead oysters rotting in the mid-day sun between cage checks, a once enjoyable experience is gone forever.
We currently are two away from reaching 50 signatures and would like to ask your help in forwarding the petition to friends and family. The more research we are doing on floating fish farms the more inclined we are to believe once this is passed, all the neighboring bottom cages will convert to floating cages. This is due to faster grow rates in the warm upper surface water, less effort harvesting, which of course leads to greater profit for the farmer. This is at the expense of all those who enjoy the bay. Again, thank you for your support and help in getting more signatures to put a halt to floating cages.
Regards,
Russ
