WARNING: SEND THE KIDS OUT OF THE ROOM, BECAUSE THIS IS GOING TO GET UGLY! By now, many of you have caught wind of the TEN YEAR CHINOOK MANAGEMENT PLAN that the Department just submitted for approval. What you may not have heard is how this plan came about, and who was involved (or not involved) in its making! As many of you who have been with us from the beginning know, we have been very cordial and patient with our Department Director, Mr. Jim Unsworth. It has been a long frustrating fight for transparency. We finally got a face-to-face meeting with Mr. Unsworth and other senior staff from WDFW, their lawyers and of course, the Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of our WDFW Commission. The very same Commission who is charged with the responsibility of supervising Mr. Unsworth! In our meeting on the 26th of Oct, the WDFW Leadership professed their staunch support for transparency, and told us how important they felt open meetings were to building trust! They even agreed to send a letter to Chairperson Loomis to show how much they supported transparency! They also said they would let us see a draft of the letter, which they didn’t. That was the first clue that they were not to be trusted. Now, back to the TEN YEAR PLAN that is being shoved down your throat. All the while Mr. Unsworth was spouting his undying support for transparency and convictions for supporting the sportsmen in our fight for open meetings, HE WAS ENGAGED IN SECRET MEETINGS WITH THE TRIBES, AND CRAFTING A HARVEST PLAN THAT WILL SEVERELY RESTRICT NON-TRIBAL FISHING FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS! ARE WE PISSED? YOU’RE DAMN RIGHT WE ARE!! AND YOU SHOULD BE TOO!! But, It gets better! Take a look at a recent email that Ron Garner, PSA State Board President sent out: To all: We have hired Pat Pattillo to breakdown this plan to tell us what it means. It is really really bad for Washington State. Please share with everyone you know. This is an unacceptable deal that was made between WDFW and tribes negotiating our next 10 year Puget Sound Chinook Harvest Management Plan. Many of us are digging into this to try to understand and everyone is shaking their heads in disbelief. This was done behind closed doors without WDFW Commission being advised or even told about it. That’s right, we just confirmed with a very reliable source that the Commission wasn’t even read in on it! In fact, when asked to confirm if the statement made above was true, here is their reply: “Almost totally true. we heard little or nothing and no details.” How can the supervisory agency of the Department allow a Dirty TEN YEAR PLAN to be done, in secret meetings, without THE COMMISSIONER’S or ANY PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE, and NOT BE FURIOUS? IT’S TIME FOR THIS TO END! IT’S TIME FOR MR. UNSWORTH TO BE SENT PACKING! WE, THE CITIZENS OF THIS STATE CAN NO LONGER CONTINUE TO BE TREATED AS SECOND CLASS CITIZENS, BEING PUSHED ASIDE BY A DIRECTOR WHO IS OUT OF TOUCH WITH HIS STAKEHOLDERS. HE HAS FORGOTTEN WHO BUYS HIS LICENSES AND PAYS HIS SALARY! The Commission is meeting at the Natural Resources building First Floor, Room 172, Olympia this weekend. This Saturday, Dec 9, at 7:00 AM, there will be an opportunity for you to tell the Commission EXACTLY HOW YOU FEEL about SECRET MEETINGS and Mr. Unsworth’s total disregard for the citizen sportsmen! Be there early at 7:00 and sign up to speak. I WILL SEE YOU ALL THERE! WE WILL NOT BE IGNORED OR PLAYED ANYMORE!
