Open Parasolid Kernel's Source Code and APIs under a Free License
The Issue
Currently, the Parasolid kernel and its APIs, the industry standard geometric kernel, are the sole property of Siemens. While Siemens does license the Parasolid kernel on a "level playing field" basis, many projects find the licensing process and fees prohibitive. This lack of open-source access notably affects the capabilities and development of slicing software and academic research. By opening the source code under an MIT or similar permissive free license, we could enable an entirely new class of use cases for powerful BREP models.
While other free kernels exist, they are either not under significant development or are licensed too restrictively for use in industry software, drastically limiting adoption. Interoperability of solid models is essential in most CAD workflows, and facilitating the wider spread of the Parasolid kernel would benefit all industry.
Please, sign this petition to support the opening of the Parasolid Kernel's source code and APIs' source code under a free license.
