Brighton school district management avoids discussing why abusive teachers and staff members were allowed to remain in close proximity to students, sometimes for years on end. Yet as a 2021 accounting report shows, the district understood its potential liability all along and socked away millions to pay anticipated Child Victims Act settlements.

The report (screenshotted here) shows that the district increased its insurance reserve fund by $2.8 million between 2020 and 2021 “to fund possible uninsured liabilities that may result from claims filed under the New York State Child Victims Act.” The Brighton administration has never adequately explained how sexual abuse of underaged students could happen on campus, under staff members’ noses, for extended periods of time. But money, as ever, speaks volumes.
