Here is a round-up of known CVA cases against BCSD that have yet to be resolved. This list is compiled from public court documents; we do not have access to possible additional suits that are not currently in the public domain. Case: BARBARA SHIELDS v. TOWN OF BRIGHTON et al (including Brighton Central School District and the Brighton Board of Education)

Summary: Barbara Shields, a former student of BCSD and Town of Brighton coach Duncan Ververs, alleges that Ververs sexually abused her hundreds of times over a five-year period, both on and off school campuses, when she was a teenage gymnast. From the lawsuit complaint: “The abuse occurred on Council Rock’s campus in its gym, office, locker room, gymnasium… on the Brighton High School campus in the gymnasium; on Defendant BCSD and BBOE’s school buses… and in hotel rooms on out of town trips for Brighton sanctioned gymnastics competitions.”

Case status: “Pre-RJI” (awaiting assignment of a judge)

Case: ANNETTE MIANO JAMES v. TOWN OF BRIGHTON et al (including Brighton Central School District and the Brighton Board of Education)

Summary: Annette James, another former Duncan Ververs student, alleges that he sexually abused her hundreds of times over four years when she was a teenager. From the lawsuit complaint: “The abuse occurred on Council Rock’s campus in its gym, office, locker room, gymnasium… at Ververs’ home; in Ververs’ vehicles; and in hotel rooms on out of town trips for Brighton sanctioned gymnastics competitions.”

Case: K. K. v. BRIGHTON CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT

Summary: K. K. alleges that she was sexually abused by a janitor at Brighton Middle School, now known as Twelve Corners Middle School, when she was about 10 years old. She does not recall the janitor’s full name but addressed him as “Mr. Jim.” From the lawsuit complaint: “The Plaintiff, when she was a minor, was repeatedly sexually assaulted and abused by a janitor… Mr. Thomas, Plaintiff's English and homeroom teacher, witnessed and allowed the janitor to take Plaintiff out of class and school activities on numerous occasions, took no action, and the sexual assaults and abuse continued.”

Case: S. W. v. TOWN OF BRIGHTON et al (including Brighton Central School District and the Brighton Board of Education)

Summary: S. W., another former Duncan Ververs student, alleges that Ververs sexually abused her more than 1,000 times when she was a teenager. From the lawsuit complaint: “The abuse occurred on Council Rock’s campus… in Ververs’ van and home… and in hotel rooms and other gymnastics club locations… The majority of this abuse occurred on BCSD and BBOE property and was done in the presence of or within the observation of BCSD and BBOE-hired teachers and administrators and Brighton employees.”

Case: CORTNEY DAY v. TOWN OF BRIGHTON et al (including Brighton Central School District and the Brighton Board of Education)

Summary: Cortney Day, former Duncan Ververs student, alleges that Ververs sexually assaulted her when she was a teenage gymnast. From the lawsuit complaint: Day “attended a gymnastics’ competition in Staten Island, New York… After the gymnastics’ meet, Ververs and other employees and/or agents of BCSD and GCSD [Greece Central School District] provided alcohol to Plaintiff and other gymnasts at the hotel that they were staying at. Plaintiff became intoxicated and thereafter Ververs sexually assaulted and abused Plaintiff.”

Case: WENDY CLAR v. TOWN OF BRIGHTON et al (including Brighton Central School District and the Brighton Board of Education)

Summary: Wendy Clar, a gymnastics student of Duncan Ververs, alleges that Ververs sexually abused her on hundreds of occasions over a five-year period, including on the Council Rock school campus. “The majority of this abuse occurred on BCSD and BBOE property and was done in the presence of or within the observation of BCSD and BBOE-hired teachers and administrators and Brighton employees.”

Case: SARAH NADAV v. BRIGHTON BOARD OF EDUCATION et al (including Brighton Central School District)

Summary: Sarah Nadav, former Brighton High School student, alleges that school employees failed to protect her at age 14 and 15 when she was sexually assaulted by an adult visitor in the Galaxy magazine school office. The Galaxy magazine was overseen by English teacher Gary Wiener, who has himself been accused of sexually assaulting minor students. From the lawsuit complaint: “During the time Dr. Wiener was tasked with supervising the Galaxy room and preventing students from being sexually abused in the Galaxy room, he was sexually abusing young female students at BHS… The Galaxy room had couches, no windows, no ability to see into the room when the door was closed, an open door policy where students could come and go as they pleased, and it was supervised by Dr. Wiener, a sexual predator.”
