Moose Factory Island Wants Public Dock Access in Moosonee, Ontario

In 2013, the Township of Moosonee removed the public docks on the shoreline of the Moosonee waterfront of the Moose River. The public docks have been located at this site for over 40 plus years and longer. The Township of Moosonee rezoned this parcel of land back to parks land and has restricted access for vehicles to drive down a ramp to drop off people to access water taxis that would transport people that need to get to the community of Moose Factory, Ontario. Moose Factory, Ontario is an island located on the Moose River and can only be accessed by water or air. In the summer months, residents and those travelling to Moose Factory Island (a community of approximately 2,500 people) rely heavily on the water taxis to transport them from the mainland of Moosonee to Moose Factory. Elders and persons with disability have difficulty walking down the steep shoreline of the Moosonee and have had their Human Rights violated. The Township of Moosonee has placed the residents of Moose Factory in undue hardship. Residents and travellers to the community of Moose Factory are being discriminated by denying public dock access. (Please note: there is public boat access on Moose Factory Island). Residents of Moose Factory are being denied public access to Service Ontario offices located in Moosonee and the only means of transportation by air or rail with both of these being situated in Moosonee. We, the Moose Factory residents, family of residents, and supporters of this petition, are requesting intervention from the Province of Ontario to provide an immediate remedy to this problem.
