Creating this petition came from a project, a school project, of making a short film about a social justice issue. The two of us chose to make that film about a topic that affected us and almost everyone: the issue of rape culture. Rape Culture: a culture where rape and sexual violence are seen as an accepted and expected norm. After a conducting the interviews for our film and doing a lot of research, we started to learn much more about the term 'consent culture'. Consent Culture: 1. A culture where all the sex that is had is consensual. 2. A culture of asking for permission and respect for one another. We started to understand that in order to make a difference and change the rape culture that we live in, we had to work on creating a consent culture. To us, that started with changing the curriculum and that brought us to the petition. And now we're back to what started it all, our film. Recently the film, titled 'Allegedly', had its online premiere on the Huffington Post (which you can check out here: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/06/23/allegedly-rape-culture-tessa-hill-lia-valente_n_7637832.html). It's also on YouTube for the enjoyment of all. We really hope that the film can be an effective educational tool, and that with it we can create a greater awareness about rape culture. Thank you so much for all of your continuing support. *Side note, We will both be on CTV's morning show, Canada AM, on July 16th at 7:40 to talk about the film.
