Change the Olentangy High School mascot

Change the Olentangy High School mascot
The Issue
For dozens of years, slowly, sports teams all over the nation have begun to change their stereotypical and offensive Native American mascots to something more appropriate. Times have changed significantly since these mascots were created. These mascots were created In an era when racism and bigotry were accepted by the dominant culture. Since the 1960s, more and more talk and action has come about to change these names and mascots. The call for change started in 1968 by the NCAI (National Congress of American Indians). For the past 70+ years, Olentangy High School has had The Brave as their mascot, a Native American. Why is Olentangy different? Why should we continue to keep the Brave, a Native American, as our mascot? Without Native Americans, The United States would not be what it is today. They’ve helped shaped America. However, the depictions in American culture are often pervasive, powerful, at times demeaning. So why should they be depicted and honored though mascots that show them in an offensive and demeaning manner? Is it time for Olentangy to retire The Brave and select a new mascot? The Brave was named the mascot over seventy years ago and it's safe to say the people around the nation have changed. Numerous teams around the nation have changed their mascot and its time Olentangy follows in their footsteps.
