Oklahoma Senate, House of Represenatives: Mandate Proper Storm Shelters in School and Business Building Codes
The Issue
A tornado has ravaged Moore, and they continue to ravage homes, businesses and schools throughout the state, year after year. There was an unnecessary loss of life that could have been avoided with proper storm shelters in place. A mere designated "Storm Safe" area, such as a bathroom or hallway, can no longer be considered safe considering the complete destruction we have witnessed from grinding larger tornadoes. We owe it to the many victims, especially children, to ensure we have effective shelters in place. Although the structural devastation may be unavoidable, the loss of life is not. Storm shelters may be expensive, but you cannot put a price on life.
