The epidemic of addiction affects 1 out of every 10 people in our country. Why is there nothing that we can do to help those that are addicted before they get in trouble with the law? Nobody wants to do anything because they are afraid to make the first move. Well as a family member of several addicts that I have watched struggle for years, I want that to change. I am tired of feeling I can do nothing to help my loved one kill himself daily. Treatment can be just as effective whether voluntary or involuntary per the article attached. Watching a loved one struggle with addiction is just like watching someone die from cancer except with addiction the person is choosing to kill themselves. What people need to understand is that once you become addict the chemical composition of your brain is changed and it takes at least 6 months (that depends on type of drug, length of use, amount of drug used) to regain some normal brain function. If it was a mental illness cause the person's brain to not function normal then we could get help but because it isn't classified as a mental illness there is no help. Drugs cause an illness call psychosis. Persons using drugs are more likely to become violent and commit crimes. Let's take a stand stop the crime before it happens by getting addicts help before it goes this far. This would not help our loved one addict but everyone by reducing number of crimes committed, and reducing tax payer dollars that are spent on drug court. With Casey's law, treatment is the responsibility of the family member seeking treatment. Please take a stand for the loved ones of addicts. Addiction does not discriminate, and one day you will more than like have to deal with addiction.
