Re-instate the ETEP program at UBCO for the September 2016 entrance

This petition is put forth to re-instate the September 2016 Elementary Teacher Education Program (ETEP) that the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) has suspended. ETEP will be cancelled in full if approved by the Okanagan Senate on December 17th 2015. UBCO has already accepted applications for the program this fall and has advised students over the course of two-and-a-half or more years to take the specific requirements for this program.
For the last 2 ½ years, the University of British Columbia Okanagan (UBCO) has been advising many students to take specific prerequisite courses for their Elementary Teacher Education Program, specifically for the September 2016 applicants.
Students were advised in the spring of 2015 that the program would be completely changing for the 2017 intake, but were assured that the 2016 program would still go forth. Applicants chose specific courses for their 2015/2016 year, based on this information.
Applications to the 2016 ETEP program were accepted by the University in October 2015 and students were again assured by UBCO Academic Advisors that: "…regardless of any changes, for the 2016 intake, the faculty will be admitting based on the existing admission requirements".
However, on December 4th 2015, the University of British Columbia Okanagan emailed applicants to advise them that the Faculty of Education had now decided to suspend the Elementary Teacher Education Program for the 2016 intake.
The program is currently pending cancellation unless denied at the Okanagan Senate meeting on Thursday, December 17th from 3:30 - 5:30 in the ASC 130 building at 3333 University Way Kelowna, BC.
While applicants have not yet been advised in full of the new admission requirements, what is known is that the new prerequisites are vastly different than those of the previous program and will require 2016 applicants to take, at minimum, an additional 30 credits or 10 classes. Had applicant's been given notice, they could have adjusted their course schedules and classes over the last 2 ½ years. At the very least, they could have adjusted their 2015 courses.
We, the undersigned, are petitioning the Okanagan Senate to deny the cancellation of the September 2016 Elementary Teacher Education Program at the University of British Columbia Okanagan, located at 3333 University Way, Kelowna BC V1V 1V7. This would result in a re-instatement of the program, as already offered, for a September 2016 intake while admitting based on the existing admission requirements.
