

We need to change the business as usual culture at STRS. Business as usual has resulted in teacher employee contributions rising from 10% to 14%. Teachers also have to work 5 years longer for full pension benefits which no longer guarantee any cost-of-living adjustments to their final average salary. No teacher should have to go into retirement with no inflation protection in sight. Imagine living 20 years on a fixed income. Why would any teacher want to teacher in Ohio?
While all this has happened, legislators continue to appoint trustees who are out of touch with the hardships of STRS members. Sadly, a number of out of touch members have been elected as trustees as well. These trustees have rewarded STRS staff with lavish bonuses and allowed investment fees to go unchecked. Last year, six-figure bonuses totaling over $10 million dollars were rewarded to a staff that lost $5 billion of pension dollars.
In April of 2023, there is an important election. A trustee's seat will become available. The current holder of the seat has stated that while retirees would like to have a cost-of-living adjustment, most are just happy to have a monthly check. This trustee also voted to reward STRS staff lavish bonuses.
