Create a housing law that prevents source of income discrimination
The Issue
The new wave of housing discrimination.....source of income requirements....why does it matter the source of income when it pertains to credit worthiness of a potential renter/home buyer when a simple background or credit check of whether a potential renter/home buyer will be able to afford rent/mortgage payments. Source of income requirements are a way for certain landlords to screen out potential applicants that belong to the housing nondiscrimination laws protected class. Such requirements make it difficult for people who receive government or subsidized (ie Social Security Disability, SSI, TANF, Veterans Disability Compensation, Housing Choice Vouchers (Section) income, from finding safe and comfortable living spaces. I ask you, is this fair?? Have we become a nation where only the employed are accepted within society? Where the employed are placed above the unemployed in social status? While some states such as California and New York have protections from such discrimination, my home state of Ohio does not. So I am calling upon the legislative body to fix this problem with a law that will not promote such class-ism!
