We are writing to ask that Orange County, Florida Public Schools food service offer daily vegan meal options, or join the “Meatless Monday” movement and serve a vegan meal once a week. Currently, over 50 US public school districts do this, and the Los Angeles Unified School District has just completed a pilot program and will be offering a vegan option every day at each of their schools by the end of the 2017-18 school year. Orlando has a strong commitment to reducing its carbon footprint, and as you probably know, plant-based eating is a great way to reduce climate emissions and fight childhood obesity. In addition, meals without animal products are an easy way to conform to the diets of many different religions. Vegan meals are compatible with Kosher and Halal diets, as well as the diets followed by Seventh-Day Adventists, Hindus and Buddhists, and Rastafarians who follow an Ital diet. There is a great deal of guidance available for purchasing and preparing wholesome, filling, vegan-friendly meals that follow national nutrition guidelines.
