Have Occidental's administration review the effectiveness of Emmons Wellness Center

We call upon Occidental College's administration to do a formal review of the effectiveness of Emmons Wellness Center (EWC).
During the Fall 2017 semester, students from the Media Arts and Culture class “Digital Tools for Radical Change” identified that many students have had issues with Emmons Wellness Center, ranging from month long appointment backups to life-threatening misdiagnoses, among others.
After we administered a survey to the student body — in which over 50 people responded —many felt that the care they received was unprofessional and in some cases, damaging to their physical and mental well-being. Countless students began messaging us with their own personal stories and experiences with EWC that they felt were problematic.
We understand that some of these concerns are beyond the control of EWC and out of the scope of their capabilities as a health center. We also understand that not all of the stories collected are a fair representation of the staff and their efforts to provide the exceptional healthcare they promise. However, it is blatantly obvious that there is serious tension between students and EWC; many feel that Emmons is not meeting their pledge. Therefore, we want the administration to look into these issues and assess the effectiveness of EWC.
A committee of administrators, EWC representatives, and student representatives would form to connect the official assessment of EWC. The assessment would include a campus-wide survey to gather both quantitate and qualitative data about students' current uses of, perceptions of, and experiences with EWC. Staff and faculty at EWC would also be issued a survey and asked to assess their own views and opinions on the current state of EWC. During this time, the committee would update the Occidental community on their findings and next steps.
We as a student body demand the following:
-A formal assessment of the effectiveness of EWC
-An updated EWC student portal that allows for students to schedule their appointments and view (in real time) if there are any upcoming appointments
-An updated webpage that first and foremost CLEARLY outlines what EWC can and cannot provide in terms of health services
-if necessary, an increase in funding for technology, staff, and upgrades for EWC
We hope this petition will open up a dialogue between students, EWC, and the administration to address health-related needs on campus.
