NYS Drivers Licenses and Passports Have Room for Non-Binary People, It's Time Schools Do Too!

Both New York State and the federal government recognize more than 2 genders and have provided an X option for non-binary identities.

It's time New York City Public Schools, do the same!

2021, New York State sign into law The Gender Recognition Act:

"Transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary New Yorkers deserve access to identity documents that reflect who they are and enable them to participate fully in society. Inaccurate identity documents can lead to harassment and abuse, particularly from police. The Gender Recognition Act would ensure that X gender markers are available on all New York identity documents and create a privacy-protective, streamlined, and non-stigmatizing process for people to change the names and gender markers on their identity documents."

Starting on April 11th, 2022. Individuals can now choose an X as a gender marker on their passports

"The Department of State has reached another milestone in our work to better serve all U.S. citizens, regardless of their gender identity.  In June, I announced that U.S. passport applicants could self-select their gender and were no longer required to submit any medical documentation, even if their selected gender differed from their other citizenship or identity documents.  Starting on April 11, U.S. citizens will be able to select an X as their gender marker on their U.S. passport application, and the option will become available for other forms of documentation next year."
