We call upon Nottinghamshire County Council to install street lights along the stretch of Station Road, between the University of Nottingham Sutton Bonington Campus and Kegworth Village.

The Issue

On a daily basis, students and staff from the University of Nottingham Sutton Bonington Campus, as well as other members of the local community from the surrounding Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire villages access Station Road via foot, cycle and car. Despite its heavy use, the road is not fit for purpose. A large stretch of Station Road used by the local community has no street lights. In winter time, this makes those travelling along the road feel particularly vulnerable, especially considering the speed at which vehicles travel along the road. Whilst a bus serves the road intermittanly, it is a very expensive service and only runs until 6:30pm, and as such certainly isn't student friendly in this case. In January 2013, the University of Nottingham Students’ Union carried out a survey with staff and students based at the Sutton Bonington Campus, asking them about the state of the road and their usage of it. Of 1034 respondents: - 60% stated that they use the road on a daily basis, and 23% on a weekly basis. - 44% of respondents stated that they feel unsafe, and 14% felt very unsafe. - 92% of respondents reported that they often had to travel along Station Road in the dark. The issue of lack of street lighting along Station Road, is particularly pertinent for pedestrians and cyclists. The reality for pedestrians: Not only is it difficult to ensure that they are walking along the pavement, but many feel that when it is dark, they will not be visible to vehicles travelling along the road. They also feel that their personal safety is at risk. The reality for Cyclists: Cyclists also reported that they feel vulnerable considering the speed that cars travel along the road. With multiple blind corners, many have reported ‘near misses’ on the road, particularly when travelling in the dark, and feel that it is only a matter of time before a serious accident will occur. The issue of Station Road’s safety has affected locals for many years, however, with more and more students choosing to live in the village of Kegworth, the road is steadily growing as an issue for students. We therefore request that Nottinghamshire County Council consider the safety of local residents in the area as utmost importance, and install street lights along the part of the Station Road which is currently lacking. The Students’ Union has engaged with the local community on this issue, and has backing from a number of key stakeholders, including Kegworth Parish Council and the University of Nottingham, who also recognise the severity of the Station Road issue.
