Update from Jaira Koh, student leader at the Pomona-Pitzer Christian Fellowship:
Last Friday, after our large group meeting, our fellowship officially voted to disaffiliate from InterVarsity. The margin was 45 votes to disaffiliate, 3 votes to affiliate, and 4 abstentions.
We have chosen to disaffiliate to oppose InterVarsity’s (IV) recent policy, recognising that this is one of the few ways students can meaningfully register their disapproval of IV’s decision. We choose to be in solidarity with queer and affirming staff and students nationwide.
We hope that our disaffiliation will encourage other chapters – encourage them to similarly disaffiliate, encourage them to have more conversations about the policy, and encourage them to resist the policy more strongly in whatever channels are open to them.
Our decision was also made while conscious of the fact that it was a matter of time before our student government would decide to kick IV off campus for homophobia – a charge whose legitimacy I am personally not inclined to contest. Please consider if this is a possibility for your chapter, and if disaffiliation might make sense even practically speaking.
Our IV staff continue to serve our chapter. Disaffiliation does not mean your staff will lose their jobs. It means that we send a message to IV as an organisation that we no longer desire to carry its name, with the connotations now attached to it. For our chapter, it is business as usual. For IV, they have lost their official presence on two campuses.
