📣 📣📣 Northfield Residents: What Are We “Unlocking?” Who Benefits?! 📣📣📣
As our community continues important conversations about the future of Northfield, I encourage every resident to thoughtfully evaluate information from all sources—whether it comes from the Village, advocacy groups, social media, neighborhood organizations, or websites that present themselves as community initiatives.
If you visit websites such as the newly created, Unlock Northfield, allegedly funded by The Illinois Coalition for Jobs, Growth and Prosperity (Gidwitz family), please, take the time to ask important questions, such as:
• Who created the website?
• Who funds or supports it?
• What is its stated purpose?
• Are multiple viewpoints presented, or primarily one perspective?
• Are claims supported by original documents, public records, or verifiable sources?
It is concerning when advocacy websites influence important public policy discussions without clearly identifying who is behind them. Regardless of one’s position on the proposed TIF, transparency helps residents evaluate the information they receive.
So many questions remain…
Unlock Northfield is an advocacy website supporting the proposed Village Center TIF and redevelopment efforts. It is not the Village’s official website.
The site promotes redevelopment by emphasizing potential benefits such as economic growth, new businesses, and downtown investment. Its messaging is primarily persuasive rather than neutral.
The website appears to focus far more on potential benefits than on commonly debated issues such as impacts on taxing districts, the “but-for” requirement, long-term fiscal implications, oversight, and whether development would occur without TIF assistance.
Questions residents may wish to ask:
1) Who created and funds the website?
2) Is it affiliated with developers, consultants, or Village officials?
3) Are potential conflicts of interest disclosed?
4) Are factual claims supported by cited sources?
5) Does it clearly distinguish facts from projections and opinions?
Residents should compare information from multiple sources, including the Village’s official TIF documents, SB Friedman reports, Joint Review Board materials, Illinois TIF law, and independent analyses before reaching conclusions.
Every organization and community initiative has the right to express its views. Likewise, every resident has the responsibility to evaluate information carefully before accepting it as complete or impartial.
Healthy communities are built on transparency, respectful dialogue, and informed decision-making—not on assumptions or marketing alone. The strongest decisions come from reviewing primary documents, attending public meetings, asking questions, and considering a diversity of perspectives.
Northfield deserves a civic environment where residents can freely exchange ideas, respectfully disagree, and make decisions based on facts rather than messaging. Regardless of where you stand on any issue, an informed community is a stronger community.
Please remain engaged, ask thoughtful questions, verify information independently, and encourage respectful conversations with your neighbors. Our community—and the decisions that will shape its future—deserve nothing less. We need to continue to ask, “What exactly needs to be “unlocked” in Northfield?” and “Who holds the keys?”
