No Quarry at Oakabella

The issue

Boral Resources (WA) Ltd have a proposal to quarry and crush granite rock at Oakabella, between Geraldton & Northampton. This is a beautiful part of the Midwest. The proposed quarry is in close proximity to existing homes with 3 homes inside the buffer zone. There are 36 residents living close by who will be affected. Two of the residents are in their mid-eighties and their lifelong home is 760m from the quarry. Another two residents live approximately 460 m from the quarry. The Oakabella Homestead (a historically significant building and popular tourist attraction) is within 1.5km of the quarry. There are 2 small businesses plus surrounding farmers who will be affected by the quarry operations.

The Councils own Local Planning Strategy has designated the Oakabella area for "Rural Smallholdings" & states "Ensure that all future planning including development proposals, continues to protect and enhance the natural environment and natural feature that attract tourists and visitors".

Oakabella is a part of the Moresby Range and the Local Planning Strategy states "Developments not in keeping with the landscape qualities such as quarries and rural industry should be located outside the Moresby Range if possible"

The quarry proposal is clearly contrary to the Councils own Local Planning Strategy.

There are significant deposits of hard rock granite north of Northampton located in less densely populated areas that would be more suitable for the quarry site.

To ensure the quarry does not go ahead the Northampton Shire Councillors have to vote against the proposal in a meeting of the Shire on Friday 16th September 2016.
