Negro /Negre/Neekerit is racist, Hitler swastika- Antisemitism, Turku Art Museum, Finland
The Issue
#NoRacismInMuseums Exhibition of Dick Bengtsson's painting of a black man and woman labelled Negro /Negre/ Neekerit Art and Hitler swastika symbols is racist and offensive to black people, Jews and those in solidarity with them in the fight against colonial racism and injustice. The exhibition is at Turku Art Museum (Turun TuTaidemuseo/Turun Taidemuseo), city of Turku, Finland. Either, contextualize or stop the exhibition labelled Negro /Negre/ Neekerit. N-word with no trigger warning shocked us, harmed us and upset us, yet we had gone to enjoy art, thus, we need a public apology from Turku Art Museum, and a plan on how to consider diversity in their practices.
The art pieces with Hitler Swastika symbols in the exhibition are problematic. Negro and Holocaust are part of dark history, they bring memories of oppression, suffering and genocide which cannot be viewed as art to celebrate. The framing of the pieces with no context, with N-word inflict violence on black people who visit the museum, and encourage people who visit the museum to call black people Negroes. The Hitler symbols in a city where Neonazi were matching threatening people are violent.
Mia Haltia the curator says “Turku Art Museum thinks the “Negrer is relevant as a work of art.”. But, SahWira Africa International says Negro or Negrer in Swedish is an outdated and offensive adjective that should be not be used with no historical context to inform viewers. Mia Haltia also argues that not using Negro is censorship, but, we say give context, remove the exhibition and do not promote racism and violence on black people and Jews. The way it is exhibited does not determine the way the viewers will interpret it. The viewer will leave the museum thinking it is good to call black people Negroes and even treat black people the way they were treated, and it is good to support Neonazi and Hitler's ideology. Racism and Neonazi is on the rise, so, it is irresponsible for a reputable museum to promote that.
