No Teacher Left Behind: Fostering Inclusive Appreciation during World Teachers' Day
The Issue
As World Teachers' Day approaches, a concerning video on social media reveals a subtle yet painful issue in our school culture. A recent social media post shared by Ms. Reynald Lariza, showed an incident during a school celebration where students distributed gifts and flowers to teachers while leaving one teacher empty-handed, then said, "Mangtas kayka, maong wala kay nadawat" ("You are too strict, that's why you received nothing").
While this might seem like a small and shallow incident, it reflects a broader emotional reality. Appreciation during school events should not be a popularity contest or reserved only for gentle or easygoing educators.
Every professional across every sector—from doctors to public servants—was once shaped and guided by educators. Whether an educator is strict, demanding, or gentle, their discipline and commitment to serve, build our character, resilience, and knowledge.
When celebrations exclude specific teachers based on strictness or personal preference, it undermines their hard work and dedication. Genuine gratitude isn't about expensive material gifts; it is about acknowledging the foundational role every educator plays in our growth.
We call on all students, student councils, and school communities to practice inclusive appreciation to all educators especially this coming World Teachers' Day:
👩🏻🏫• Ensure that every adviser and subject teacher receives a gesture of appreciation on Teachers' Day.
👩🏻🏫• A handwritten thank-you letter, a simple flower, or a respectful verbal acknowledgment costs little to nothing, yet makes an educator feel seen, valued, and respected.
👩🏻🏫• Let us foster empathy and kindness in our classrooms, recognizing that strictness often stems from a teacher's high standards for our future success.
Sign this petition to show your support for an inclusive, thoughtful, and respectful World Teachers' Day across our schools.
