Periods aren't scary or gory - The GST charged on menstruation is! Please share this update widely on social media by clicking the Facebook and Twitter buttons below. The following response was sent to Facebook Administration: Dear Facebook Admin, The video you rejected was not meant to scare anyone with its imagery. It is, however, shocking that the Government of Canada charges GST on menstruation products. Menstruation is a natural bodily process that happens approximately every month for about 40 years of a menstruator's life. In Canada, women make up 51% of the population, and when you include trans and genderqueer populations who get periods, you may come to realize that menstruation is actually the norm. Accidents happen, and when they do, our blood is not gory or shocking, though unfortunately in our society it is shameful and embarrassing. Facebook's rejection of this ad only further perpetuates a culture where women's bodies are deemed unnatural, abnormal, and shameful. This video is funny. It pokes fun at the stereotypes created by companies that sell period products, it pokes fun at the discriminatory law in Canada that charges GST on menstruation products, and it pokes fun at many other "essential products" the government does not charge GST on. I will continue to resubmit the ad until it is approved. In the meantime, I will continue the No Tax On Tampons campaign to raise awareness about the discriminatory taxation of menstruation products in Canada.
