The Boeing Company will (or has already begun) demolish(ing) five buildings in Area IV at the Santa Susana Field Lab that were used for radioactive experimentation.

The 1980s tests to determine if the buildings were safe used outdated equipment, now obsolete regulations, and questionable methods but still found radioactive detections. Regardless, they were declared "abandoned buildings." Boeing will demolish the buildings without any oversight from the DTSC or the Department of Health, and can use regular demolition and disposal methods, according to a 2023 lawsuit - putting the community at risk of exposure to plutonium 239, one of the most dangerous materials on earth.

It's now 100% on the shoulders of the community to fight back and demand that Boeing either prove the buildings are safe or use the most protective demolition and disposal measures possible. Read more:

“Boeing should prove to us that plutonium-239 won’t get into our water or air during the demolition and disposal,"  says Melissa Bumstead, Parents Against SSFL founder and Co-Director, and whose daughter is a two-time cancer survivor. "Just because what Boeing is doing is legal doesn’t mean it’s safe.”

What you can do to help today:

We have asked Boeing multiple times for a date when the demolition is starting and they refuse to answer. Please ask Ms. Kamara Sams for the dates of the demolition at 818-466-8793 or kamara.sams@boeing.com. Please share if you learn anything at santasusanacampaign@gmail.com
