Petition updateNo more kids with cancer: clean up the Santa Susana Field LabThe Dept. of Energy’s plan is illegal and will put residents in danger.

Do you remember that Rick Perry, secretary of the federal Department of Energy, visited America’s worst nuclear meltdown, the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL) on September 6th? And how he didn’t invite local Congress Members, the community, or the press? And it seemed really bizarre?

Secretary Perry was setting a nefarious plan in motion, starting with his visit to the site. Only two weeks later the Department of Energy issued a Record Of Decision for demolishing 13 radioactive contaminated buildings on the “hottest” part of the field lab.

What the Department of Energy plans to do is not only illegal, but also incredibly dangerous.

If the Department of Energy moves forward with their plans they will be breaking three laws, undermining California’s EPA and DTSC regulating authority, and will send thousands of tons of contaminated material to regular dumps! Not hazardous waste dumps, not radioactive waste dumps...regular dumps, the kind not far from where people live.

My biggest fear is that without CalEPA and DTSC oversight, the Department of Energy's actions will mirror Boeing’s 2013 illegal and dangerous demo of radioactive buildings on their portion of the SSFL. Their reckless handling of contaminated building debris could have exposed thousands of people to dangerous radioactive contamination.

Rick Perry is going forward with his illegal and dangerous ROD so he can look good saying that he saved millions of dollars on the cleanup...at the expense of our health.

We need to expose the lie and protect our community. We might only have three weeks until they start tearing down contaminated buildings. Will you take 1 minute to be part of our Tweetstorm to Rick Perry asking him to honor the safe and complete AOC cleanup?
