No more Blocksi
The Issue
Blocksi, the Chrome extension that is known for "cloud-based solution for K–12 Web Filtering, YouTube Analytics, and Internet Access Time control," as it says on their Chrome webstore extension. They state that they're leading in this field, but they don't do the best job of it. They state on their extension page that "Blocksi is fast, reliable, with a proven track record at many school districts, homes, enterprises, and government agencies." However, Blocksi is notorious for not being fast, blocking Britannica articles, and not blocking the actual sites that they say they do. Blocksi has been reported by countless users to "Randomly sign you out or close all of your tabs!" This unwanted behavior causes people to switch from Blocksi to competitors. This extension usually advertises towards schools, and there are laws in place to stop them from selling info on children. Still, it records your screen, can lock you out of your computer, and does all sorts of other sketchy things on your device. This is a violation of the 1st and 4th amendments of the Constitution.
This petition is to get Blocksi off the market and give all users privacy. Please vote to get rid of Blocksi. It is a horrible waste of money to pay for when you are promised all of these features, but you get quite the opposite. On Blocksi's about us page, they state as their mission to, "Blocksi’s mission is to develop and provide innovative appliances and software that empower schools to have full control over the internet content and student devices. We are dedicated to ensuring schools and students have the tools to navigate the digital world with confidence, freedom, and autonomy." Ironically, these are the same statements that Blocksi is notorious for suppressing.
On their milestones page, they state that they have detected 85,000 mental health crises over this month. They have used children's data to contrive this depiction of school as a place that helps you learn and where you can feel safe. This information says they detected crises, but they never said they tried to prevent them. If they detected them, they could have let their schools know and tried to help fix it. Who knows what is being done with this surplus of data under the hood of this obomination of a waste of resources, AI, and willpower?
It just feels wrong to have a child grow up on the internet and have every piece of their online activity moderated. Blocksi tries to make this depiction of a perfect world where children grow up knowing how to tackle the world, but it isn't possible. Let me rephrase, you can't find and block every game site or proxy; a new one pops up every week, and more forks on different domains and platforms even faster. There are whole sites and channels dedicated to just displaying proxies, some upload daily 10 whole proxies. You just can't control the internet, nor a child or a person. Blocking websites just makes them more determined to find more and bypass these restrictions. Viewing a live preview of their screens and being able to "Heads Up!" people whenever isn't good. It proves that their "Beyond a Simple Classroom Screen Monitoring System" isn't such a good idea at first glance and that, just maybe filtering and monitoring everything about a child's virtual experience, isn't the way to go and to let the kids roam.
