Hello James Braddock Park Defenders,
There is a new cause to fight in North Bergen, NJ that needs your attention. It not only affects the park, but all the surrounding communities:
Diamond Generating Corp., a subsidiary of Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi, is currently seeking New Jersey approval to build one of the largest power plants in the state. It is being called the North Bergen Liberty Generating Project and the proposed plant that is aimed to be built in the Meadowlands (on a 15-acre parcel at 94 St. and Railroad Ave., adjacent to Bergen County, the Hackensack River and the Meadowlands in North Bergen, NJ) will generate electricity for New York City only, not for NJ.
According to planning documents an underground cable would run from the plant through North Bergen, Fairview, Cliffside Park and Edgewater before crossing the Hudson River to Con Edison’s 49th Street substation.
The Consequences:
-Powerplants reduce local property values on average -7% (according to a housely.com report)
-Despite claims that many jobs will be created only ~33 of those will be permanent jobs (the rest ~1,000 are shorter term construction/maintenance jobs)
-In many cases tax abatements are given to these large Corporations, thus the towns do not see any real tax benefit for many years
-This project could negatively affect the recovering Meadowlands wildlife
-Natural gas is cleaner energy but it is not clean energy
-Natural gas plants emit greenhouse gases such as methane and carbone dioxide.
-They also emit nitrogen oxide, which forms smog
-The area is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, there are thousands of people who live less than a mile away from the proposed plant site
-Toxic fumes produced by Natural Gas are known to cause diseases as illness such as Cancer
-New Jersey has the highest autism rates in the country, with some studies showing a correlation between pollution levels and the disease
-A 2017 report from the American Lung Association gave Hudson County an “F” grade when it came to ozone pollution.
-Toxic fumes also contribute to premature aging
