No Forced AI Proctoring at UoPeople

The Issue

The students of University of the People, are asking the administration to seriously reconsider making Rosalyn AI a required proctoring system.

This is not a small update for us. It directly affects whether some of us can even continue studying.

A lot of students simply do not have the hardware this system expects. Not everyone can afford a decent webcam, microphone, or a computer powerful enough to run proctoring software smoothly. UoPeople was built on accessibility, and this feels like it goes against that completely.

There are also students using Linux or other systems that these tools do not support. That should not be a reason someone cannot write an exam. Your operating system should not determine whether you are allowed to study.

Then there is the privacy side of this. Rosalyn AI requires uploading ID documents and capturing your face and personal data. That is a serious ask. Data breaches happen all the time, and once that kind of information is out there, you cannot take it back. Identity theft is a real risk.

A lot of us are also uncomfortable with how this data might be used. There are concerns about facial data and personal information being stored, processed, or even used beyond exam verification. We are being asked to trust a system with very little control on our side.

Offline proctors already work. They are simple, flexible, and accessible. They allow students with different financial situations, tech limitations, or privacy concerns to still participate fully. Removing that option does not improve anything for us, it just creates more barriers.

We are not asking to remove proctoring. We are asking for choice.

Keep offline proctors as an option.

UoPeople is supposed to make education more accessible, not less. Right now, this change risks doing the opposite. We are asking you to listen to your students and keep a system that actually works for everyone.
