Hi, Everyone!
First off—thank you. Seriously. Every signature, share, and conversation you've sparked about this issue has helped push it forward. I’m beyond grateful for this community of people who believe in compassion over criminalization when it comes to mental health crisis response.
I wanted to update you on where things stand. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to lock in a bill sponsor before the 2/21/25 deadline. But that’s not the whole story—because we also made huge strides:
✅ Stronger Bill Language – With the help of legislative counsel, we refined the SHIELD Act to make it sharper, clearer, and more impactful.
✅ More Allies & Advocates – I connected with incredible organizations and individuals working on humane crisis response, building a coalition that will only keep growing.
✅ Legislative Momentum – I knocked on dozens of legislators’ doors. Many told me that if they had room this session, they would have supported the bill. That tells me we’re on the right track—we just need to get in earlier next time.
✅ Growing Public Awareness – The fight for caring, not carceral mental health care is gaining national attention! Check out this recent coverage in MindSite News and Psychology Today:

🔗 Psychology Today: There Are No Bad Kids: The Diagnosis of Oppositional Defiant Disorder Often Overlooks Racial Trauma
This fight isn’t over. I’m taking a short break to recharge, but I will be coming back with a plan to secure a sponsor EARLIER in the season and give this bill the best possible shot.
In the meantime, I’ve put together a free resource:
📖 Before You Say Yes: A Parent’s Guide to FULL Informed Consent & Mental Health Crisis Management for Your Child.
This guide uncovers hidden risks in crisis responses and equips families with practical strategies to advocate for their child’s safety and well-being. To access it, just fill out this quick survey (it only takes a few minutes).
Again—thank you. This movement isn’t slowing down, and I hope you’ll stick with me for what comes next. If you want to stay involved, reply here or reach out.
Onwards.
With gratitude,
Rupi... Sachi and Saint!
